Start Write Stay Right – a Holistic Handwriting Programme based on our award winning book (Teacher Book Award NASEN 2008).
This course seems to be the part of handwriting tuition that everyone forgets… how to teach the physical skills of handwriting such as holding the pencil, developing finger dexterity and fluency, angling paper as well as the environmental issues, the postural components, and the acceptance that each child needs to be taught as an individual.
This course provides methods to assess and review individual progress, whatever your writing scheme. and at whatever age you wish to introduce good habits. Of course, we hope that this is right from the beginning!
The day also considers ways to help older children revisit this complex skill, and how to introduce Information Technology with a minority of pupils who are not succeeding with handwriting. It also supports you in finding methods to help children who dislike handwriting – such as boys with Asperger’s Syndrome who commonly find this skill hard.
Training includes looking at your whole school process, auditing what is actually happening and encouraging positive change.
Handwriting is a vital life skill, closely linked to self esteem and success in learning. Without fluent, automatic handwriting, pupils are highly likely to achieve lower grades at SATS and beyond. Schools need to consider their basic teaching and input on handwriting. This is the course to help you find where to start making improvements for your pupils.
The delegate packs include a range of assessments, work sheets and a complete framework of interventions for all staff to use.
Feedback has been tremendously positive, with many staff returning to their schools determined to make basic but vital changes to the way handwriting is taught.
Start Write Stay Right is also the basis of our successful handwriting packages for individual pupils, available within 20 mile radius of Derby. See examples of handwriting progress from young people who have worked on this with us during recent months.
